Four privileged viewpoints of “El Baix Llobregat”

The Baix Llobregat is a region that links the Montserrat mountains with the Mediterranean Sea through the banks of the Llobregat River. The mountains of Collserola and Garraf border the river and tota the plain that forms the Delta del Llobregat. That is why, in the region where we are, you can enjoy several points that offer very top views. Today we will visit four privileged viewpoints of Baix Llobregat, which you can reach from our hostel. MuchaMasia is in El Prat de Llobregat, in the heart of the Delta del Llobregat, and a few minutes from the airport and the center of Barcelona.

Mirador de l’Illa

As we have said, we are in the heart of the Delta del Llobregat. The delta is a flat territory, with hardly any difference in level. Right on the beach of El Prat de Llobregat, you will find one of the privileged viewpoints of the region. It is the Mirador de l’Illa. The building is a pumping tower of the Baix Llobregat desalination plant, which on its upper floor has a terrace that serves as a viewpoint. It makes it a unique point to observe the entire plain of the Delta del Llobregat from the same delta.

Once above you can see all the transfer of the airport and the landing and takeoff of the aircraft. In the background, Montserrat. And closer. Collserola and Garraf. Just behind us we have the immensity of the Mediterranean Sea and all the long beach of El Prat. The tower of l’Illa is built just above the pool of l’Illa, recently recovered.

And a secret. If you look, right in the pine forest closest to the tower you can see the Casa Gomis, by Antonio Bonet. It is considered one of the jewels of Catalan architecture. You can get to the Illa viewpoint by bicycle from MuchaMasia. You just have to ask us

The second of the privileged viewpoints: Sant Ramon

Sant Ramon is a mountain that crowns the municipality of Sant Boi de Llobregat. It is one of the most visible and identifiable mountains of the whole region, since it can be seen from any point. Sant Ramon is crowned by the hermitage that honors the saint himself. It is the watchtower of the Delta del Llobregat and the gateway to the coastal sierra of the region. The panoramic views from Sant Ramon encompass from the city of Barcelona to Castelldefels. From its heights, the frenetic pace of vehicles, ships and airplanes will seem like a tingle that meanders through the Delta plain. And you can even get to see Mallorca.

To go up to Sant Ramon we offer you two options, and up to three. The simplest one is to take bus L78 from El Prat and get closer to Sant Boi de Llobregat. There, you can walk up from the Marianao Park to Sant Ramon on a paved road with a gentle slope.

Another option is to access Sant Ramon from Viladecans. Right next to the Baseball field there is a dirt track that goes around the mountain until you reach the hermitage. It is a longer way than the previous one but something more naturalized.

And the last option is to go up to Sant Ramon by bicycle. It is for the brave but it is a walk from El Prat de Llobregat to the mountain. And the satisfaction of ascending by bicycle is compensated by the spectaculars seen.

Mirador de la Salut

We have already seen the sea and the plain of the Delta del Llobregat. And now it’s time to look north and see the magical mountain of Montserrat. Considered as a sacred space for its religious and social symbolism, Montserrat is an important pilgrimage center in Catalonia.

Well, this time we propose to look and admire the mountain of Montserrat from its southern slope, which overlooks the Baix Llobregat region. The Mirador de la Salut is a unique space in Collbató, the highest town in the region. By day the viewpoint gives us a magnificent view of the mountain. At night, its illuminated path gives it a special charm.

And if you have time, visit the caves of Salnitre. They are caves belonging to the massif of Montserrat, karstic system, in conglomerate, mainly calcareous; rich in phosphate minerals, formerly there were saltpeter farms. Inside it houses the largest set of rooms in Catalonia. Its organic and undulating forms inspired Gaudí for works such as the Sagrada Familia, as we explain here.

To get to Collbató, the easiest way is to take the Hispano Igualadina bus from the Sants Station in Barcelona.

Airpot viewpoint at El Prat

El Prat airport is very close to MuchaMasia. But this time we propose you to live the experience of almost being able to touch the airplanes. When you leave the Prat towards the beach, you go along a bicycle path parallel to the airport grounds. After wandering through orchards, you arrive at a large roundabout. There you will see stone hammocks and also several mounds that face the head of the main runway of the airport.

What happens then? Well, the planes land a few meters after the viewpoint and it provokes the sensation that our heads are touching. The feeling is incredible and the resulting photos are spectacular. And if you are a spotter (amateur to photograph airplanes) you have another viewpoint a few meters away to capture the whole movement inside the airport runways.
