Rural History of El Prat: Farmhouses, Fields and Agricultural Memory
Before becoming a modern, well-connected town, El Prat de Llobregat was for centuries an agricultural area, shaped by farmland, the river and life in the farmhouses. Discovering this rural history is an authentic way to get to know the town and understand the identity of the rural Baix Llobregat.
Agricultural El Prat: fertile land by the river
The proximity of the River Llobregat made these lands especially fertile. For generations, El Prat’s fields were used to grow cereals, vegetables and market garden produce that supplied Barcelona and nearby towns. The agricultural landscape set the rhythm of daily life.
Today, it is still possible to explore part of this past by walking along the Camí del Riu, which follows the course of the Llobregat, or along old rural paths such as the route that runs alongside the Canal de la Bunyola, historically used to connect fields, farmhouses and markets. These routes make it easier to imagine what El Prat was like before urban growth.
The farmhouses of El Prat: homes, work and memory
The farmhouses of El Prat were the heart of rural life. They were not only homes, but also centres of agricultural work and shared community spaces. Many were built between the 16th and 19th centuries and combined living areas with storerooms, stables and courtyards.
Among the most representative is Can Comas, home to the Parc Agrari del Baix Llobregat and a key place for understanding the area’s agricultural tradition. We also highlight our accommodation, a historic farmhouse located in the town centre that has been converted into a hostel.

A legacy that is still present
Although the landscape has changed, agriculture remains part of El Prat’s identity. The Parc Agrari del Baix Llobregat, which can be explored on foot or by bicycle, preserves active farmland and links different historic paths and farmhouses. Areas such as the surroundings of Can Comas show how tradition and the present coexist in balance.
This agricultural legacy is also reflected in the commitment to local produce and the protection of the land, direct heirs to centuries of work in the fields.
