Excursion to the mountain: we go to “El Montseny”

We are already immersed in spring. It is surely one of the best times of the year to go out to the field. The biological activity of animal and plant species multiplies. We have already spoken to you on other occasions about visiting places such as the Delta del Llobregat. But this time we have thought about getting high and going towards the mountain. From MuchaMasia, the rural hostel urbà del Prat de Llobregat, we propose a spring outing to Montseny.

The Parc del Montseny

The Montseny Natural Park is located between the regions of Vallès Oriental, Osona and La Selva. This park is formed by a mountainous massif with more than 500 million years old. This place is one of the green lungs of Catalonia. The Turó de l’Home is the highest mountain, at 1712 meters of altitude. It is one of the places that is usually covered by snow during winter. On clear and windy days, its silhouette can be seen from El Prat de Llobregat. The extension of this park is quite wide and you can access it from various places.

A Special Flora and Fauna

In Montseny you will find fauna and flora species most typical of central Europe, thanks to its climate. The Montseny forest habitat largely determines the fauna that inhabits it. In the holm oak are the wild boar, the fox, the jineta or the common dormouse, among the best known mammals; the goshawk, jay or robin are some of the most common birds.

Of all the species, especially the Montseny Newt stands out. This species (Calotriton arnoldi), discovered in 2005 as a new species, is the only example of an endemic vertebrate in Montseny and Catalonia, and it is also the only endemic urodel species in Spain. In this video you can see it

Regarding the flora, the structure in ecological floors as we ascend, configures various habitats with various species. From beech and fir, through the Mediterranean forest and to the bush in the highest alpine meadows.

Itineraries to enjoy nature

Our proposal to visit the Montseny is to let yourself go and get into nature. This park offers many proposals to discover various habitats. If you come emboldened, why not try to ascend to the Matagalls or the Turó de l’Home? If you feel like walking but without much unevenness, walk through the undergrowth and let the undergrowth take over you.

In any case, you can learn about various itineraries at this link.

How to get to this natural park?

The Montseny Natural Park is about a 45-minute drive from MuchaMasia. We therefore recommend that you arrive by public transport. From MuchaMasia you can take the train in El Prat de Llobregat and get to Sant Celoni. From there, a bus connects with Gualba, already inside the Park. We advise you to be equipped to spend the whole day and make the most of this nature walk.
