These Are the Birds You Can Spot in the Llobregat Delta in Spring

Spring is an exceptional time of year for birdwatching in the Llobregat Delta, located in El Prat de Llobregat—the town where we’re based. During their migration northwards, in search of milder summer temperatures, hundreds of birds make a stopover in the delta. And some others nest beside its wetlands. In this blog post, we list some of the birds you can spot in the Llobregat Delta in spring.

Purple Heron

Due to its length and wingspan, the purple heron is the most majestic of all the herons spotted in the Llobregat Delta. It usually perches on the edge of the wetlands, sheltered by vegetation, while it waits to catch prey.

Black-winged Stilt

This long-legged, elegant, black-and-white bird tends to fly in groups when it feels threatened. It is one of the most common and eye-catching species in the Llobregat Delta.

Yellow Wagtail

The yellow plumage on the chest of the yellow wagtail sets it apart from other wagtail species. Small in size, it is also known for having the shortest tail of all the Spanish wagtails.

European Serin

This is one of the birds that heralds the arrival of spring with its unmistakable song. Males are known for their yellow colouring. This bird can also be seen in green areas around the town.

Swallows and Swifts

The arrival of swallows is also considered a sign of spring. They’re often seen flying in groups. Swifts too are commonly seen in flight—remarkably, they never land on the ground, as they wouldn’t be able to take off again. For this reason, they nest in wall crevices of buildings. Like the European Serin, both swallows and swifts can be seen not only in the delta but also in the city.
