The Llobregat, the river that carries us
The Llobregat River is our waterway, our water arm. Without this river we would not be what we are. Water carrier, landscape shaper and forger of its people. The Llobregat flows into El Prat after being born in the Pyrenees. Today we propose you to know the river that carries us, paraphrasing José Luis Sampedro in his famous book. And we can do it on foot or by bicycle.
The Llobregat, a flood of history
The Llobregat River has always divided Catalonia. Rubricatus in Roman times, later Llobregat, its name means red river. And so it is because it refers to the reddish color of its waters that drag the sediments along its more than 150 kilometers. It rises in Castellar de N’Hug and flows into El Prat de Llobregat, close to home.
The Pont del Diable in Martorell
The river has been the backbone of our region, the Baix Llobregat, and it is the element of union between all the municipalities that surround us. It is the river that carries us. And that generates stories and life around it. That’s why we want you to approach the river and enjoy discovering its corners.
An amazing river mouth
The Llobregat river flows into El Prat. And it is here where it forms a wonderful delta. At its arrival to the sea a trail of ponds, lagoons and flood zones has left us an amazing landscape. We invite you to walk along the river from MuchaMasia. A walk of 6 kilometers takes you to reach the river bank and from there, follow it to the sea. It is a very pleasant walk that allows you to discover the birds that live in the protected areas of the Llobregat Delta.
Natural areas of the river
If you look closely, you will see flamingos, cormorants and seagulls. On one side you have the river and on the other the agricultural fields of the Parc Agrari. We really invite you to enjoy this marvel. You will forget that you are next to Barcelona.
Sport on the river
The river invites us to get close to nature and also to do outdoor sports. The whole path that follows the riverbank has become the best outdoor gym in Barcelona. It is the best place to go jogging, walking or cycling.
The Llobregat as it passes through Molins de Rei
From El Prat leaves the path of the Riu that if you follow it by bike or on foot, you could get almost to Montserrat. And always next to the river. From here you can reach Cornellà, Sant Boi de Llobregat or you can cross the famous Pont del Diable in Martorell.
And if you dare to do it by bike, although it involves a nice effort, it will surely be worth it. It is a good way to know against the current of the river that carries us, our Llobregat.
